Red Bull Ktm Dakar Rally hero Sam Sunderland takes time out and joins our Dirty Dozen band of brothers and ploughs through our questions…

Dirt Hub: Do you have a Pre-Race Playlist you listen too, and if so name a couple of tracks that are on it?

Sam: Yea bit of a mix with music here’s a couple of bangers. All I see is music – fundamentals / Warning – Notorius B.I.G / Options NF / That Far 6LACK

DH: When was the last time you cried?

Sam: January 2020, TWICE! Going out of Dakar, then hearing the news of my friend Paulo Conclaves crashing.

DH: What is your favourite inspirational quote?

Sam: I follow a badass called David Goggins on the gram and he always gets me fired up.

DH: Do you have any weird suspicions or pre-race rituals?

Sam: Not really I just like to have everything perfect and prepared before I go, food/goggles all that kinda stuff.

DH: What drives you most to get up in the morning and go training?

Sam: The fear of going back to the 9-5 that I did for 4 years after leaving school and don’t want to look back in 10 years and wonder if I gave a bit extra would I have won more.

DH: If you didn’t race what sport would you play or take part in?

Sam: I like spearfishing/freediving and enjoyed boxing when I was younger.

DH: What is your biggest Phobia?

Sam: Snakes scare the shit out of me.

DH: Who is your biggest sporting idol and why?

Sam: Mike Tyson because he was a bad ass, and on paper too small to a be a heavyweight but he didn’t give shit and was just ruthless!

DH: Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Sam: I’d like to be a bit more settled as right now I’m a bit all over the place in terms of living and still searching to fulfil some goals.

DH: What is your all-time favourite movie?

Sam: Snatch

DH: Who has had the biggest impact on your career?

Sam: Georges Jobe, I was lucky that he came out to Dubai while I was living there and brought Strijbos/Tonus over to train and it opened my eyes a bit to see what I needed to do if I wanted to be successful.

DH: What is your philosophy on life?

Sam: I definitely feel like I’m trying to make the most out of every day/opportunity and always feel lucky to do what I do for a job.
